I remember a certain week about 5 years ago, when a random person who became a "friend" approached me and asked me to go to this discreet meeting. Turns out it is an emerging company called Primerica – a Multi-Level Marketing scam company which operated entirely behind the scenes, promising riches and glory to anyone who walked in the door. All you had to do was buy their materials.
The reality is that the "materials" were the real way the company made money, not by the products (in this case, "financial services"). Just like Quixstar, who used to lie to everyone that they were not Amway Global (who was a renown MLM scam company, and who Quixstar is now proud to be named, now that the original generation is 30 years behind). Citi probably realized that Amway, the age-old scammers, had the entire world fooled, and decided to jump on the bandwagon of successful deceit by buying Primerica.

Let's face it – business, especially big business, is in it to make money. Multi-Level Marketing, scam as it may (or may not) be, is an excellent way to make money. As long as big businesses can get away with it legally, big businesses are willing to do whatever it takes to make money.
Even worse are the credit card companies. Credit cards are literally a legal scam, and the very fact that Citigroup scams millions of people every day with their credit card, removes the remote possibility of any inherent morale. If Citi is able to use an age-old scam called Multi-Level Marketing, legally or technically, they are bound to at least try. Even though Multi-Level Marketing is a scam, it has survived to this day because it works, and because people believe it.
